“Though all the peoples walk
Each in the name of his god,
As for us, we will walk
In the name of the LORD our God forever and ever.”
Micah 4:5 NASB1995
It’s hard to imagine travel before modern vehicles existed. But they’ve only been around for just over 100 years. Prior to that, most forms of travel included walking. They had animals and wagons, but people walked most places they went, especially when Jesus walked this Earth.
Time moved at a much slower pace because they had to walk everywhere. Plans were not hurried. Patience abounded much more.
When people walked everywhere, they either became lost in deep thought by themselves or engaged in deep conversation when walking with others. They built relationship with God and with others during these walks.
Jesus walked everywhere with His disciples. They traveled long distances, often on foot. And while they walked together, there was so much time He spent teaching them.
When we talk about our relationship with God and growing in Jesus, we talk about it being a walk with Him. In many places throughout the Bible, a relationship with God is described as walking with Him.
God walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden until they disobeyed Him.
“They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day…” Genesis 3:8a NASB1995
Listed among the descendants of Adam, Enoch is mentioned as having walked with God. And he never died. Each other person on the list was counted for all the years he lived, then “he died.”
“Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” Genesis 5:24 NASB1995
Noah walked faithfully with God and lived as a righteous man, the only one in his time. No one else around him, not even his own extended family, was found righteous. But he and his wife, his sons, and their wives were saved from the flood because of his faithfulness.
“But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.” Genesis 6:8-9 NASB1995
Abraham walked faithfully with God. He didn’t question the Lord when He told him to leave everything he knew and go to a land God would show him in the proper time. He didn’t refuse when God told him to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac. And he stopped immediately when God told him to.
“Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless.’” Genesis 17:1 NASB1995
These men and others walked with God daily throughout their lifetime, not just when the big miracles happened. They passed tests of faith because of their daily submission to His voice.
Walking with God isn’t just living and walking on this earth, trying to be good citizens.
Walking with God is a life filled with being actively faithful to Him, following Him daily, and habitually keeping His commandments. It is a life characterized by the practice of continuous righteousness.
It is a long, faithful obedience to God’s Word.
Walking is slow, steady, and consistent, so you can get where you are going. Yet we’ve sped up the method of everything in the modern world and have lost so much meaning and fulfillment in life because of it.
This modern age is filled with too much rushing and not enough resting. We need to slow down, to think deeply on the Word of God, and to listen to Him intently.
God says to be still and know Him. He wants us to truly know Him in a deep relationship.
“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” Psalms 46:10 NLT
We were created for HIM.
“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.” Colossians 1:16 NASB1995
Too many of us live for ourselves. We walk in a manner that we think is right. But God has called us to a higher purpose.
We have a purpose in HIM.
To truly know our purpose, we have to truly know the Creator.
That’s why I am also working on a series about the names of God and His character. Because He is where our hope lies, where our healing comes from, and where we find rest.
God’s path for us is always directing our hearts toward Him. He wants us to walk with Him.
“He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8 NASB1995
He has created us for Himself in His own image. (Genesis 1:27)
He works in us to draw us closer to Himself and to make us more in His image every day. (Philippians 2:1-18)
“for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13 NASB1995
We are called to be like HIM.
“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps” 1 Peter 2:21 NASB1995
To be like Jesus, we must know Him. We must study His Word. We must rely on His Holy Spirit to lead us. Then we will be equipped for the good works He has prepared for us to do.
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 NASB1995
We must walk with HIM.
If you are unsure of which path to walk, ask God to guide you. He will be with you every step of the way if you abide in Him.
“Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning; For I trust in You; Teach me the way in which I should walk; For to You I lift up my soul.” Psalms 143:8 NASB1995
Put Him first in your life. Slow down and prepare to learn to walk with Him. Watch for more to come.
My prayer for you as you read this series:
“For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.” Colossians 1:9-12 NASB1995
